Knee Pain

by Wendy Johnson, LMT, CMT, NCBTMB

There are many factors that contribute to soft tissue (muscle/tendon/ligament) pain. For the sake of this discussion we are going to focus on the knee. As well, we will look at an example of a postural issue that causes pain in the knee capsule, and show how clinical massage can bring realignment and balance to this area, thus relieving pain.

The feet are one of the body’s windows into the postural integrity of it’s sum parts. With one simple test a clinical massage therapist can see where postural imbalances occur as the feet are the body’s foundation. This test may display an imbalance such as a fallen arch on the medial side of the foot that leads to inner knee pain. Because the muscle, tendon and ligament of the inner leg muscles that are attached to the fallen arch are being pulled down, pain and various other issues may continue on up the body.

With all this being said, knee pain is multi-faceted and may stem from many different postural issues. To fight knee pain that’s related to soft tissue imbalances, one my turn to clinical massage therapy with wonderful and surprising results.

Clinical massage techniques used to care for knee pain may consist of strengthening techniques to tighten overstretched and out of balance leg muscles. As well, clearing strokes, PNF & cross fiber friction may be used to realign and lengthen structures that contain a buildup of scar tissue due to old injury. Hydrotherapy may be used to either mobilize tight structures or help reduce inflammation or remove old debris from areas.

Whatever the physician diagnosed condition or postural issue, a clinical massage therapist is specially trained to assist in a client’s wellness regime.
