Shin Splints (Periosititis and Compartment Syndromes)
Periositis and compartment syndromes produce pain in the lower leg. These two conditions, as well as tibialis posterior tendinitis and tibial stress fractures are sometimes grouped under the lay term “shin splints“, a non-specific phrase that describes pain along the medial border of the tibia with exercise.
Symptoms include but are not limited to:
- Excessive pronation of the feet
- Inflammation
- Pain along border of tibia
- Initially, achiness is worse on getting up in the morning and with exercise, then decreases after a period of warm-up. It returns towards the end of the exercise period and continues afterwards. As the condition progresses, the pain may occur throughout the exercise time and during activities of daily living. There is tightness and cramping if the client “runs through” the pain.
